Our independent dementia advocacy project is about enabling people with a diagnosis of dementia to access the services and support that they need and to have a voice in decisions that are being made. It's also to support them though situations where they may be abused and need to find safeguarding solutions. The advocacy we offer will be independent of any other service people living with dementia use. This means the person with dementia will be at the heart of the decision making process, and we can support and represent them without any conflict of interest
For most people, making their own decisions and choices is a matter of considerable importance. Being part of decision-making processes is not only where self-identity is expressed but is also an important aspect of personal freedom. This principle is at the heart of advocacy services for people living with dementia.
The need for advocacy for people with dementia, who face complex issues around social exclusion and deteriorating cognitive function is much broader than access to statutory services and treatment. This Independent advocacy service will provide support for people to:
- make changes and take control of their life
- feel more valued and included in their community
- be listened to and understood.
People living with dementia will be more involved in decisions about their lives, will be safeguarded from harm, and will be able to access appropriate services and assessments for their needs through the dementia journey. Our advocacy service aims to shift the balance of power to maximise the level of influence people with dementia have over their own lives. We aim to ensure their voice is heard, the views and wishes are considered and that their rights are upheld.
Families and carers will vicariously benefit from having a professional involved who can help navigate health and social care, ensuring their loved ones care is personalised and their rights upheld. Health and social care will also benefit, because Advocacy helps them fulfil their duties in line with the fundamental principles of voice and control co-production.
