The speaker for December is Gareth Mills. A graduate in history, with many years’ experience in Secondary schools across south and west Wales. He worked in Local Government as Change Manager for Education & Lifelong Learning and Assistant Director of Education. Gareth is a tour guide at Pembroke Castle; A Trustee and Chairman of The Sunderland Trust at The Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre. He lectured part-time in Pembrokeshire College until 2020. He is the author of 2 books and regularly gives talks to Local organisations.
Gareth’s talk will relate the history of Stackpole from a Bronze age settlement through to its Norman roots. Then it traces the remarkable story of the Campbell Cawdor family who created a magnificent estate in the 18th and 19thCenturies. It finishes by describing the sad demise of the wonderful mansion during the Second world war; the conversion of much of the estate to Castlemartin range and the rebirth of part of the estate under the National Trust.
