A Incorporated Charitable Organisation (registered charity number 1177316) that is run by D/deaf people for D/deaf people.
D/deaf includes people who are profoundly Deaf who have British Sign Language (BSL) as their primary or sole language and deaf people (who may also describe themselves as "hard of hearing") whose first language is English.
D/deaf people have a range of communication needs and communicate through the use of listening aids and loops systems, lipreading, speech to text services and BSL interpreters. We aim to ensure everyone is included no matter what their communication preferences are.
We supply hearing aid batteries, undertaking tubing replacements and give general support and advice for hearing aid users.
We organise trips and events e.g. to museums, local tourist venues, theatre events, steam train trips and indoor bowling
We undertake home visits to people who are unable to attend our meetings
We also support for businesses and organisations that wish to improve their services for D/deaf people. We can test your loop system to see if it is working. We can also provide information and advice on making your services accessible.
During Covid-19 restrictions some of these activities have had to stop. We have instead introduced telephone support, video chats and online meetings.
