There is no doubt that budgets are getting ever tighter - if it is not inflation pushing up costs, it's the price of staples - the end result is that food costs are up by about 25% in just two years.
So, anything we can do to ensure full value for the food we buy, is going to have an impact on our pockets - in a good way!! We have drawn together some resources around this and full links and details are below.
First up the food campaigner Jack Monroe. Jack has been offering tips on budget cookery for over a decade now and the website is crammed full of options, all neatly categorised from snacks and treats, to breads and vegan recipes. Each recipe has ingredients listed and priced (**note these prices were correct at the time of publishing - almost every product costs more now**) and even allowing for increases, these are still some of the cheapest recipes found anywhere.
The BBC Food website also has a range of recipes that have been selected as £1 dinners - please note these are £1 per portion rather than for the whole dinner. The recipes are also designed to be used with a 'low cost storecupboard' - please make sure you check that link carefully to ensure you have all you need.
We will be putting out some videos of recipes made with Pembrokeshire ingredients throughout the project - want to see what's out there on YouTube already - check out the links below:
There are also many videos claiming to show you how to get a weeks worth of food at a supermarket for £10 or similar. It's important to note that a lot of these were put out before the recent inflation spike and the associated increase in food costs. It may cost a little more now and, like the BBC website, many assume you have a basic store cupboard.
If you have the time and can afford the initial outlay, one of the easiest ways to reduce your food budget is to buy in bulk, cook in bulk and freeze portions for another day. There is a website full of hints and tips and includes a section on recipes.
