Cooking on a Budget

Introducing some easy ways to save money and cook healthy nutritious food.

There is no doubt that budgets are getting ever tighter. If it is not inflation pushing up costs, it's the price of staples. The end result is that food costs are up by about 25% in just two years.

So, anything we can do to ensure full value for the food we buy, is going to have an impact on our pockets. In a good way. Here at Pembrokeshire Community Hub, we have drawn together some resources around this subject so that you can explore the links and details below.

JACK MONROE

'Cooking On A Bootsrap' | Jack Monroe's Website

First up is the food campaigner Jack Monroe. Jack has been offering tips on budget cookery for over a decade now and his website is crammed full of options, all neatly categorised from snacks and treats, to breads and vegan recipes. Each of those recipes has ingredients listed and priced, prices which will almost certainly have increased since the recipes were published, but even allowing for those increases, these are still some of the cheapest AND tastiest recipes available anywhere.

The BBC Food website also has a range of recipes that have been selected as £1 dinners, though please be aware that these are £1 per portion rather than for the whole dinner. The recipes are designed to be used with a 'low cost storecupboard', so, please make sure you check that link carefully to ensure you have all you need.

FREEZER MEALS 101

Freezer Meals 101.com

'Spend less time cooking so you can spend more time living.'

If you have the time and can afford the initial outlay, one of the easiest ways to reduce your food budget is to buy in bulk, cook in bulk and freeze portions for another day.

The excellent Freezer Meals 101.com site shows you how to batch cook low cost meals, showing you how to save both time and money when it comes to your food budget.
